When I started the BSM Top 20 five years ago, the idea of ending it on the Monday after the Super Bowl was essentially a tribute to the year, as the NFL does. The podcast explosion has forced us to create an additional category, so we’ve reserved the last two days for the best sports radio and original podcasts.
If you’ve read any of the previous lists, you’ve heard me praise Steve Stone Voiceover for sponsoring this year’s series. An independent platform like ours couldn’t provide the excess content we do without support, and thankfully people like Steve step up and make cool things like the BSM Top 20 possible. I also want to thank my son Dylan Barrett, who handled it all. creative work in this year’s Top 20 series. She combed through hundreds, if not thousands, of images, editing them in Photoshop, to compile creative designs to share on social media or hang in your office or studio. It’s not easy putting together 240 charts every year, but he dug in and did a great job.
For today’s Main Market Sports Radio category, here are a few things to remember about voting.
#1 – These results are based on 2020 performance. The 2021 changes do not affect voting. It doesn’t matter if the station added a superstar show in January or if it flopped in the ratings in the first month. The exclusive focus is on what was produced in 2020.

#4 – Our executive committee selected the top 20 sports stations based on ratings success, strength of lineup/talent, creative ideas, cross-platform excellence, local market impact, and brand relevance and respect. It’s important to remember that our voters live in different cities, have different tastes and work for different companies, so some things may get more or less credit depending on who votes. It’s not a perfect science, but it’s the best system we can think of to present the best sports radio.
And that brings us to this year’s 2020 list of the top sports radio stations on the market. The best in the country according to our executive committee is 98.5 The Sports Hub in Boston. This is the third year in a row and the fourth time in five years that a Boston sports radio station has been voted #1 in this category. BSM congratulates Mary Menna, Rick Radzik and the entire programming team for once again being recognized as a top brand, as well as all the other stations that earned a spot on this year’s list.
