OBS (Open Broadcaster Software) is a powerful open source video recording and playback software available for Linux, macOS and Windows. Although OBS is one of the best options for streaming today, it may not seem very intuitive to those without previous video editing experience.

Where Does Obs Save Recordings: A Quick Guide To Obs
In the center of the screen you can see a live preview of the recording/stream. In the lower left corner is the scene and the source list. The audio mixer is in the middle, and in the bottom right corner you’ll see the transition settings and controls to start/stop recording and streaming, and access the settings page.
A scene is a specific view/representation: it can contain one or more sources. The source can be, for example, your webcam, images, videos, slide shows, desktop windows, your entire screen.
Before you can stream or record with OBS, you need to set up a scene. You can set up multiple scenes and switch between them while streaming. For example, you might show your browser window and then switch to a scene configured to show your terminal window.
For example, you can create scenes that connect to a monitor and a webcam or multiple application windows. OBS is highly customizable, so you have a lot of options to set up your scene and render exactly what you want it to look like.

Just remember that if you set too many scenes, you can get overwhelmed with control in live mode. It’s a good idea to define controllable scenes and practice a bit to make sure you’re selecting the right scenes when you go live. The worst thing that can happen (and has happened to me a few times) is forgetting to switch from a browser window to a terminal window when you want to show some live commands (only a few minutes later you realize your mistake). If you’re using multiple monitors, it’s easier to manage the transitions between scenes because you can keep the OBS window visible so you can keep track of what’s streaming.
I’m not using a webcam or microphone on this stream. However, I use a different scene for live chats, which then includes a webcam scene and also a browser + webcam.
With OBS, you can set up multiple audio tracks, so you can, for example, play music and input audio from your microphone. However, streaming music comes with copyright issues, and you don’t want your videos to go offline or muted by piracy. There are several royalty-free options that you can use for streaming.
In either case, there are two ways to set the audio output for streaming/recording. You can configure them at the configuration level, so that all scenes in the current profile automatically provide audio sources, or you can configure specific audio sources for each scene.

If you want to configure sound at the profile level, go to “Settings -> Sound”, then select the appropriate devices you want to enable and disable the ones you don’t need.
For my streams, I use the computer’s default output as the audio source, which is easier because everything you play is streamed as audio – the only problem is that this also includes Google Calendar reminders, late notifications and possible alarm sounds. when you stream.

OBS allows you to record your content without going live, which is a great way to prepare pre-recorded live shows. The logs are saved in the output directory set in the OBS configuration. This defaults to your home directory. If you want to change this location, go to the menu “Settings -> Output -> Save Path”.
